Fact: colour is insufficient
Copper alloys can carry stable green and blue patinas. They can also develop active light-green powder associated with chloride-driven corrosion often called bronze disease. The Canadian Conservation Institute distinguishes surfaces through coherence, adhesion, powder, flaking and change, not through hue alone. A photograph of a green spot is therefore a prompt to inspect, not a licence to diagnose or treat.
Environmental history matters. Burial salts, water, high relative humidity, pollutants, handling and previous cleaning can influence corrosion. Composite objects add interactions with wood, leather, textiles or other metals. Advice designed for a bare modern bronze surface may be damaging when applied to an archaeological or coated object. Collection significance and treatment history must shape the response.
Observation: build a change record
Begin with dated images under repeatable lighting. Record overall views, details, scale and any loose material beneath the object. Note where powder or flakes appear without brushing them away. A single image shows condition at one moment; a sequence can establish activity. Keep the object’s location, enclosure and recent humidity events with the record. These ordinary details make later professional assessment far more useful.
Avoid touching suspected areas. Fingerprints add salts and oils, while pressure can dislodge fragile layers. Do not test adhesion with a fingernail or swab. If loose pieces are already detached, retain them in a labelled container associated with the object. These are general preservation principles rather than object-specific treatment instructions.
Interpretation: picturesque decay is still change
Green corrosion is often treated as visually desirable because it signals age. That preference can hide active loss. The opposite error is to remove every green layer in pursuit of bright metal. Both positions judge condition by style. Conservation instead asks whether a surface is stable, informative and compatible with the object’s significance. Historic corrosion products can be part of that significance.
Editorial photography has a role here. Saturation and contrast can make powder look denser or turn blue-green into dramatic turquoise. If condition is the subject, colour management and neutral reference targets improve the record. Mood images should not be used to claim change. The caption should identify whether the image documents an object, illustrates a general condition or is generated art.
Principle: escalate uncertainty
When fresh powder, cracking, flaking or rapid change appears, isolate the question and seek a qualified conservator. Storage guidance may reduce risk, but treatment depends on material, salts, coatings and value. Restraint can feel unsatisfying because it produces no instant shine. Yet a measured record, controlled handling and professional referral often preserve more material than an enthusiastic cleaning. For a household owner, the next safe step may simply be to stop handling, keep the object away from water and rapid environmental change, and document what is visible before seeking advice. For a collection, escalation should follow its emergency and conservation plan. Neither case is improved by scraping a spot to see what lies beneath. The absence of an immediate treatment recipe is deliberate: preservation begins by avoiding the irreversible experiment.
Monitoring does not need elaborate equipment to become more consistent. Use the same background, distance and broad lighting; include a scale; name files with dates; and note unusual leaks, moves or climate events. These practices do not replace environmental instruments or professional examination, but they reduce dependence on memory. A short series of comparable records can show whether a spot is stable, expanding or shedding material and can help a conservator prioritize the response.
