Observe before acting
Loose powder, new flakes and expanding spots deserve attention, but historic surfaces should not be polished merely to satisfy an expectation of brightness.
Control the environment
Water, high relative humidity, salts, pollutants and fingerprints can accelerate corrosion. Preventive measures often protect more evidence than aggressive treatment.
Document change
Condition images, dates and consistent lighting turn casual looking into a useful record. Intervention belongs with a qualified conservator when value or uncertainty is high.
